Raccoon River Park is one of our go-to spots for a fun and relaxing day out. Located just a short drive from Urbandale, this park has something for everyone. The highlight for dog owners is the 12-acre fenced dog park, complete with separate areas for large and small dogs. It’s a fantastic place to let your pup off-leash to burn off some energy while socializing with other dogs.

For on-leash adventures, the park also features a beautiful 3.2-mile walking trail that loops around Blue Heron Lake. Bailey loves sniffing along the path and occasionally stopping to watch the ducks and geese. It’s a serene and scenic walk that’s great for humans and dogs alike.

2. High Trestle Trail – Madrid

If you and your pup are up for a bit of a road trip, the High Trestle Trail is worth the drive. This 25-mile trail stretches through several towns, but the highlight is the iconic High Trestle Bridge. Spanning nearly half a mile and sitting 13 stories above the Des Moines River Valley, the bridge offers breathtaking views, especially at sunset.

Bailey and I love walking along the trail near the bridge, though we usually stick to shorter sections since it’s a long trail. The wide, paved path is perfect for on-leash walks, and the fresh air and stunning scenery make it a memorable outing every time.

3. Big Creek State Park – Polk City

Big Creek State Park is a fantastic spot for a day of outdoor fun. The park features a variety of trails that are dog-friendly and easy to navigate. Our favorite is the Big Creek Trail, a paved path that winds along the shoreline of Big Creek Lake. It’s a peaceful setting, with plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the views.

After a walk, Bailey loves to cool off in the lake. Dogs are allowed in certain areas, so be sure to check the signage. It’s always fun to see Bailey splashing in the water and chasing sticks—she might even think she’s part fish!

4. Ledges State Park – Boone

For more adventurous outings, Ledges State Park is a must-visit. This park is known for its dramatic sandstone cliffs, lush forests, and winding trails that offer a more rugged experience. Bailey and I love exploring the trails, especially the ones that lead to scenic overlooks of the Des Moines River.

Keep in mind that some trails can be steep, so sturdy shoes are a must. Dogs need to stay on a leash here, but there are plenty of spots where they can splash in shallow creeks or rest in the shade. Ledges is perfect for dogs (and humans) who love a little challenge.

5. Pappajohn Sculpture Park – Des Moines

For a more urban adventure, Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines is a unique option. While it’s not a traditional park with trails or lakes, the open grassy areas and impressive sculptures make it a great place for a leisurely stroll with your pup.

Bailey and I enjoy walking through the park and admiring the artwork. It’s a different kind of outing, but it’s perfect for days when you want to stay closer to the city. Just make sure to keep your dog on a leash and bring waste bags to keep the park clean.
